Every Eevee Evolution in Pokémon GO

Eevee is Pokémon GO's choose-your-own-adventure book: one Normal-type species can become any of eight evolutions, each a different type, and the game gives you a way to steer it towards every one of them. This guide covers every method, which ones you can repeat, and how to avoid spending 25 candy on an evolution you didn't want. The eight Eeveelutions

At the time of writing, every evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy whichever method you use, so collecting all eight needs 200 candy. The evolve screen shows the current cost and, once a buddy or lure condition is met, usually previews the Eeveelution you'll get instead of a question mark, so check it before evolving.

How each method works

Random evolution

If you tap Evolve without meeting any special condition, Eevee becomes Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon at random. That is fine if you'd be happy with any of the three, but it never produces the other five. Each random evolve that lands on a form you already have spends 25 candy on a duplicate, which is the real reason to use the name tricks for these three.

The name trick

Rename an Eevee to one of the names in the table before evolving, and it becomes that evolution. The catch: each name works only once per account, after which you're back to the regular methods. For Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon the name trick is the only way to choose the result, so it is worth saving for an Eevee you actually care about, such as a shiny or one with a great appraisal.

Buddy walking: Espeon and Umbreon

Set an Eevee as your buddy and walk 10 km with it. Then, while it is still your buddy, evolve it during the day for Espeon or at night for Umbreon. Day and night follow the in-game cycle (the map darkens at night), not the weather; our guide to day and night in Pokémon GO explains how that works.

Lure Modules: Leafeon and Glaceon

Stand within range of a PokéStop that has a Mossy Lure Module running and Eevee can evolve into Leafeon; a Glacial Lure Module does the same for Glaceon. The lure doesn't have to be yours, so a lured stop in a busy park works just as well. Our guide to Incense and Lure Modules covers the lure types.

Buddy hearts: Sylveon

Sylveon needs 70 buddy hearts earned with that Eevee as your buddy. Hearts come from buddy activities such as walking together, feeding treats, playing and battling, each with a daily limit, so Sylveon takes several days of steady play. Our buddy guide lists the activities and limits.

Collecting all eight: a sensible order

Bank the candy first. Aim for 200 Eevee Candy before you start, so you don't stall halfway through. Walking Eevee as your buddy earns candy as a side effect.
Use the three Kanto name tricks. Rainer, Sparky and Pyro are the only way to choose which of Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon an evolution gives you; otherwise it is random among the three.
Walk one Eevee for Espeon or Umbreon. Once it has covered 10 km, evolve it at the right time of day. Then set a second Eevee as buddy for the other one.
Collect Sylveon's hearts. This is the slowest step, so if you're in a hurry use the Kira name trick instead and keep earning buddy hearts for later copies.
Watch for lures. Leafeon and Glaceon only need you to stand near the right lure, so evolve whenever you pass one.

Which Eeveelution should you invest in?

It depends on the type you're missing, and the eight have clearly different shapes. Vaporeon has exceptional HP. Umbreon is the defensive specialist: very bulky, but with low attack. Sylveon is on the bulky side too, while still hitting reasonably hard. Espeon, Flareon, Glaceon and Jolteon lean offensive and have less HP, and Leafeon, with the same modest HP, pairs solid attack with good defense.

Type matters just as much. Moves of each Eeveelution's own type are super effective against these types, straight from the type chart:

Moves are rebalanced from time to time, so check your Eeveelution's current moves before spending Stardust, and pick the type your raid or GO Battle League team actually needs.

Shiny and Lucky Eevee

Evolution keeps what made the original special. A shiny Eevee becomes a shiny Eeveelution and a Lucky Eevee stays Lucky after evolving; its appraisal carries over too. One exception: some costumed Eevee from events can't be evolved at all, so check that the Evolve button is there before planning around one.

Eevee FAQ

Can I get more than one of the same Eeveelution?

Yes. Buddy walking, buddy hearts and lures work every time. Only the name tricks are one-off; after those, extra Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon come from random evolution.

My Eevee became Vaporeon instead of Espeon. What went wrong?

Vaporeon, Jolteon or Flareon means the buddy condition wasn't met, so Eevee evolved at random. Either the 10 km wasn't finished with that Eevee or it wasn't your buddy when you pressed Evolve. Evolving at the wrong time of day gives the other one of the pair (Umbreon instead of Espeon), not a random result.
