Pokémon Types in Pokémon GO

All 18 Pokémon GO types in one place: weather boosts, example Pokémon, and links to every type's full strong, weak and resist breakdown.

Every Pokémon in Pokémon GO has one or two of these 18 types, and every attack has exactly one type too. Type matchups decide who wins a close Gym battle or a tight raid far more than CP alone, which is why this hub exists: a short page for each type, all built from the same verified type chart so the numbers agree everywhere on the site.

The 18 types

Below is every type with its GO weather boost and a few well-known example Pokémon. Click through to a type's own page for its full strong-against, weak-to and resists lists, more examples, and practical tips.

How type advantage works in Pokémon GO

Attack a Pokémon with a move of a type it's weak to, and the move deals noticeably more damage; attack with a type it resists, and the move does less. Pokémon GO uses its own multipliers rather than the mainline games' familiar numbers, and stacks the multiplier twice for Pokémon with two types. The full breakdown of every multiplier, plus the complete 18×18 grid, lives on our type chart page.

Type advantage isn't the whole story

A type advantage is a multiplier on top of a Pokémon's own stats and moveset, not a guarantee of victory on its own. A high-CP, well-matched attacker with an efficient fast move will usually still beat a weaker Pokémon that merely has type advantage. Our battle rules guide covers how fast moves, charged moves and the same-type attack bonus fit together with type effectiveness, and our advanced mechanics guide goes further for experienced trainers.

Weather adds a second layer

Separately from type effectiveness, the in-game weather can boost certain types, generally making boosted Pokémon a little stronger and more common to encounter. The table above lists which weather condition boosts each type; our weather boosts page covers how that system works in more depth.

Where to go from here

  • New to the game? Our complete beginner guide covers the basics before you worry about type charts at all.
  • Building a raid team? See raid tiers for how raid difficulty and group sizes work, and pick attackers using the type pages below.
  • Curious about a specific type's counters, weather boost and examples? Pick it from the full list under this page, or start with a common one like Water or Dragon.
