Weather Boosts in Pokémon GO
Which real-world weather boosts which Pokémon types in Pokémon GO, what a boost actually changes, and how it interacts with raids and type effectiveness.
Pokémon GO's in-game weather isn't just cosmetic: certain real-world weather conditions boost certain types, generally raising the CP range of a boosted wild Pokémon a little, making a boosted attacker hit somewhat harder, and increasing how often boosted types turn up in the wild. The mapping between weather and type has stayed the same since weather boosts were introduced, and it's separate from (not the same system as) type effectiveness.
The weather-to-type mapping

What "boosted" generally means in practice
- Wild Pokémon of a boosted type that you encounter tend to have a higher CP ceiling than the same species found outside that weather.
- Boosted Pokémon are generally a little more common to encounter while their weather is active.
- A boosted attacker's moves generally deal a bit more damage in battle while the boost is active.
- The in-game map and weather icon are the authoritative source for what's currently boosted near you; treat the table above as the stable mapping rather than a live forecast.
Weather and raids
Raid bosses can also be affected by the current weather if their type matches what's boosted, which is one more reason to check the weather icon before deciding when to start a raid. This stacks with, rather than replaces, ordinary type effectiveness: a boosted attacker that also has a type advantage against the raid boss is generally the strongest combination available to you.
Why these exact groupings?
The seven weather conditions split the 18 types into uneven groups: some pairings loosely echo the real world (Rainy boosting Water), while others are more about balancing three types per slot than matching real-world weather to a type's theme. Cloudy boosting Fairy, Fighting and Poison together, for instance, doesn't map onto anything from the core series; it's a Pokémon GO-specific system. Because of that, memorizing the table above (or bookmarking this page) is more reliable than trying to guess a type's weather from its typing alone.

Parts of the weather system have been adjusted since it launched, including how in-game weather is determined and displayed. Check the in-game weather icon and official announcements for anything time-sensitive; the type groupings on this page reflect the stable mapping that's been in place for a long time.
