Normal Type in Pokémon GO
Normal-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Normal is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.
Normal is the most common type in Pokémon GO and the one with the fewest special rules attached to it: no Normal-type move is super effective against anything, and only Ghost-types largely shrug it off. What Normal-type Pokémon lack in offensive flair, several make up for with raw stats, and a few (like Blissey) are built almost entirely around outlasting an opponent rather than hitting hard.
Normal type matchups
Normal's row on the type chart is the flattest of any type: no super-effective hits going out, a single weakness coming in, and one matchup (Ghost) where its attacks land at only about 0.39×, Pokémon GO's stand-in for the core series' immunity.
| Category | Types |
|---|---|
| Normal is strong against (1.6×) | — |
| Normal is weak to (takes 1.6×) | Fighting |
| Normal resists | Ghost (~0.39×) |
Weather boost
Partly Cloudy is Normal's weather, shared with Rock. Partly Cloudy is common in many regions, so Normal-types are boosted more often than most; in practice that matters more for finding higher-level wild Snorlax or Chansey than for battle. The weather boosts page has the complete mapping.
Well-known Normal-type Pokémon
Some of the most recognizable Normal-types, chosen for being familiar rather than for being strong:
- Snorlax
- Eevee
- Ditto
- Blissey
- Porygon
Practical GO tips
- Because Normal moves have no super-effective targets, Normal-type attackers are best picked for their stats and moveset rather than for type coverage.
- Ghost-types brush off Normal-type attacks almost entirely, so avoid leaning on a Normal-type attacker against a Ghost-type raid boss or Gym defender.
- Several Normal-types (Chansey, Blissey, Snorlax) are popular Gym defenders because of their bulk rather than their typing, since Normal itself has only one weakness.
None of this makes a Normal-type a bad choice on its own; it just means the Pokémon's stats and moveset are doing all the work, so compare those rather than the type label.
To beat a Normal-type defender, a Fighting-type attacker is the only way to get a super-effective hit, and against bulky Gym defenders that 1.6× bonus adds up quickly.
FAQ
Is Normal a good type to raid with?
It depends entirely on the Pokémon rather than the typing. Since Normal-type moves aren't super effective against any type, a Normal-type attacker's value comes from its individual stats and moveset, not from type coverage.
