Rock is a sharp offensive type, super effective against Fire, Ice, Flying and Bug, but it comes with five weaknesses of its own, more than almost any other type. Many Rock-types are dual typed with Ground or Steel, which changes their real matchups considerably.

Practical GO tips
- A Rock-type attacker is especially good against Fire/Flying raid bosses such as Moltres or Charizard, where both of its bonuses apply for 2.56× damage.
- Rock-types are weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground and Steel, so double-check a specific Rock-type's full typing before using it as a Gym defender.
- Rock-types resist Normal, Fire, Poison and Flying, so a Rock defender can shrug off the Normal- and Flying-type moves that many casual attackers bring to a Gym.
Rock/Ground Pokémon such as Golem and Rhyperior take 2.56× from Water and Grass, so their five weaknesses are not all equal; check the second type before deciding how risky a matchup is.
To beat a Rock-type, Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground and Steel attackers all get 1.6×, so it's one of the easiest types to plan against.

Why is Rock so popular in raids despite five weaknesses?
Because raid attackers are judged on damage dealt rather than survivability, and Rock hits Fire, Ice, Flying and Bug hard, including many Flying-type Legendaries. Its weaknesses matter more in PvP and Gym defense than in a raid where you can swap in a fresh Pokémon.
