Fighting Type in Pokémon GO
Fighting-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Fighting is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.
Fighting is built for offense: it's super effective against five types, including Normal and Steel-types that resist plenty of other attacking types. Its main blind spot is Ghost: a Fighting-type move does only around 0.39× damage to a Ghost-type in Pokémon GO, the game's version of the core series' full immunity.
Fighting type matchups
Fighting's five super-effective targets are exactly the types that give other attackers trouble, which is why it's such a common raid choice. The table follows the type chart; Ghost doesn't appear in it because Ghost is neither weak to Fighting nor a normal 0.625× resister: it takes only about 0.39×.
| Category | Types |
|---|---|
| Fighting is strong against (1.6×) | Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, Steel |
| Fighting is weak to (takes 1.6×) | Flying, Psychic, Fairy |
| Fighting resists | Bug (0.625×), Rock (0.625×), Dark (0.625×) |
Weather boost
Cloudy weather boosts Fighting, along with Poison and Fairy. Cloudy days are frequent in many climates, so Fighting-type raiders get boosted fairly often; the weather boosts page explains the effect.
Well-known Fighting-type Pokémon
Fighting-types that most trainers have raided with or against:
- Machamp
- Lucario
- Hariyama
- Hitmonlee
- Conkeldurr
Practical GO tips
- Fighting-type attackers are excellent against Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark and Steel-type raid bosses and Gym defenders.
- A Fighting-type move barely scratches a Ghost-type target (about 0.39×), so keep a non-Fighting option ready if you're not certain what you're facing.
- Rock/Dark Pokémon such as Tyranitar and Rock/Steel Pokémon such as Bastiodon take 2.56× from Fighting moves, which is why Fighting-types are the standard Tyranitar counter.
Fighting-types typically have high attack and modest bulk, so they're chosen for raids and Gym attacks far more than for defending; read the tips above with that role in mind.
To beat a Fighting-type, Flying, Psychic and Fairy attackers all get 1.6×, and all three resist Fighting's attacks too.
FAQ
Which Fighting-type should I use in raids?
The one with the best combination of level, moveset and IVs among those you own; the type bonus is identical for every Fighting-type. Machamp is a traditional starting point because Machop is common and cheap to evolve, with Lucario and Conkeldurr among the stronger alternatives.
