Water is a dependable, well-rounded type: it resists itself along with Fire, Ice and Steel, and its main attacking strength (Fire, Ground, Rock) covers several types that show up constantly in raids. Water-type Pokémon are also unusually numerous, which makes them easy to find candy for.
Water type matchups
Water hits Fire, Ground and Rock for 1.6× and takes 1.6× from Electric and Grass; everything else is neutral or resisted. The table below matches the type chart cell for cell.

Practical GO tips
- A Water-type attacker is a solid, flexible choice against Fire, Ground and Rock-type raid bosses, three of the more frequently seen raid types.
- Electric and Grass-type moves are the ones to watch for defensively, since both are super effective against Water.
- Water/Ground Pokémon such as Swampert or Quagsire take only ~0.39× from Electric moves but 2.56× from Grass, so their one weakness is a big one: bring a Grass attacker.
As with every type, this is the starting point rather than the whole answer: two Water-types with the same typing can perform very differently depending on their stats and moves.
To take down a Water-type, an Electric or Grass attacker gets the bonus; Grass has the extra advantage of resisting Water attacks, while Electric hits Water/Flying Pokémon such as Gyarados for a double bonus.

Why do Water-type attackers get recommended so often?
Partly because they're strong against Fire, Ground and Rock, three types that turn up constantly in raids, and partly because Water-types are so common that most trainers already have a well-powered one. Their two weaknesses are also easy to plan around.
