Grass Type in Pokémon GO

Grass-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Grass is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.

Grass has one of the largest weakness lists of any type, five in total, which makes Grass-type Pokémon more situational than their solid offensive profile (Water, Ground and Rock) might suggest. Many Grass-types are dual typed, most often with Poison, which shifts their real weaknesses further.

Grass type matchups

Grass beats Water, Ground and Rock but loses to five types, and its attacks are resisted by seven, so the type chart is worth a look before you rely on a Grass-type in an unfamiliar matchup.

CategoryTypes
Grass is strong against (1.6×)Water, Ground, Rock
Grass is weak to (takes 1.6×)Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug
Grass resistsWater (0.625×), Electric (0.625×), Grass (0.625×), Ground (0.625×)

Weather boost

Grass is boosted in Sunny/Clear weather alongside Fire and Ground. Clear skies make Grass-type raiders a little stronger and bring out higher-level wild Grass-types; the complete mapping is on the weather boosts page.

Well-known Grass-type Pokémon

Some Grass-types most trainers will recognize:

  • Venusaur
  • Sceptile
  • Leafeon
  • Tangela
  • Shaymin

Practical GO tips

  • Grass-type attackers are a good pick against Water, Ground and Rock-type raid bosses.
  • Grass-types are commonly weak to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying and Bug moves, so check a specific Pokémon's full typing (many are dual-typed) before committing to it as a defender.
  • Water/Ground Pokémon such as Swampert and Rock/Ground Pokémon such as Golem take 2.56× from Grass moves, the matchups where a Grass attacker is the best pick in the game.

Because so many Grass-types carry a second type, the table above describes the pure type; a Grass/Poison Pokémon such as Venusaur, for example, is only neutral to Bug and Poison rather than weak to them.

To counter a Grass-type, Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug and Poison all get the 1.6× bonus, so you'll rarely be short of options.

FAQ

Why does Sunny weather boost Grass and Fire at the same time?

The in-game weather-to-type mapping isn't meant to mirror the type chart's strengths and weaknesses; it's a separate system layered on top. Sunny/Clear weather boosts Fire, Grass and Ground together regardless of how those types match up against each other.
