Flying Type in Pokémon GO
Flying-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Flying is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.
Flying-types take only around 0.39× from Ground-type moves (Pokémon GO's softened version of the core series immunity) but have three separate weaknesses. Offensively, Flying is a solid answer to Grass, Fighting and Bug.
Flying type matchups
Flying's type chart lists are balanced: three types it beats, three it loses to, and four it resists, one of them (Ground) at the ~0.39× level.
Flying is strong against
Flying is weak to
Flying resists
- Grass — damage reduced to 0.625×
- Fighting — damage reduced to 0.625×
- Ground — damage reduced to ~0.39× (barely effective)
- Bug — damage reduced to 0.625×
Weather boost
Windy weather boosts Flying, together with Dragon and Psychic. Windy is one of the rarer conditions in many places, so Flying boosts don't come around every week; the weather boosts page explains what changes when they do.
Well-known Flying-type Pokémon
Flying-types most trainers have caught or fought:
- Pidgeot
- Togekiss
- Staraptor
- Skarmory
- Honchkrow
Practical GO tips
- Flying-type attackers are a reliable choice against Grass, Fighting and Bug-type raid bosses.
- Ground-type moves barely scratch a Flying-type, which is useful to remember when you're picking a defender for a Gym that's mostly seeing Ground-type attackers.
- Flying-types resist Bug, Grass and Fighting as well as hitting them super effectively, so against a Fighting- or Grass-type boss they win the matchup at both ends.
Almost no Pokémon is a pure Flying-type; nearly all pair it with Normal, Fire, Steel or something else, so the lists above are only half the story for any given bird. Check both types.
To beat a Flying-type, Electric, Ice and Rock attackers all get 1.6×; Rock is especially good against Fire/Flying Pokémon like Charizard or Moltres, where the bonus doubles up to 2.56×.
FAQ
Why do Flying-types rarely top raid attacker lists?
Flying's three super-effective targets (Grass, Fighting and Bug) all have other common counters, and many Flying-types are judged by their second type instead. Flying is valued more in PvP, where taking only ~0.39× from Ground moves is a real advantage.
