Dragon Type in Pokémon GO

Dragon-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO: what Dragon is strong against, weak to and resists, its weather boost, well-known examples and practical tips.

Dragon-types are famous for resisting four common attacking types (Fire, Water, Electric, Grass) while having very few weaknesses of their own: only Ice, Dragon and Fairy-type moves are super effective against them. Many of the game's most powerful Legendary Pokémon are Dragon-types.

Dragon type matchups

Dragon's type chart row is famous for being neutral almost everywhere: a single super-effective target (itself), 0.625× against Steel, and about 0.39× against Fairy.

Weather boost

Windy weather boosts Dragon, alongside Flying and Psychic. Because many Dragon-type Legendaries are raid bosses, a windy day makes them tougher to beat and gives you a higher-level catch if you succeed; details on the weather boosts page.

Practical GO tips

  • An Ice or Fairy-type attacker is usually the safest choice against a Dragon-type raid boss, since both avoid Dragon's strong resistances entirely.
  • Dragon-type moves are only super effective against other Dragon-types, so a Dragon-type attacker is a specialist pick rather than a general-purpose one.
  • Because Dragon moves are only super effective against Dragon, many Dragon-type attackers are valued for their non-Dragon charged moves as well; check what a specific Pokémon can learn before powering it up.

Dragon's four resistances are what make Dragon-types such reliable generalists in raids: they can be sent in against most bosses without a glaring weakness. The exceptions are Ice, Fairy and other Dragons.

To beat a Dragon-type, Ice and Fairy attackers get 1.6× without taking extra damage back (Fairy takes only ~0.39× from Dragon moves); a Dragon attacker also gets 1.6× but eats 1.6× in return.

FAQ

Should I use Dragon-types as general-purpose raiders?

Many trainers do: Dragon attacks are resisted only by Steel and Fairy, so a strong Dragon-type deals consistent neutral damage almost everywhere. It won't beat a proper counter's 1.6× hit, but it's rarely a bad pick when you don't have one.
